The multiverse has become a popular storytelling tool in recent years, but Invincible creator Robert Kirkman says Season 2 of the Prime Video superhero show will be using it a bit differently.
In an interview with Variety, Kirkman spoke about how the story of Invincible first began being published in 2003, meaning the series’ multiverse arc was written long before the recent surge in popularity. He stated that Invincible Season 2 will be using the multiverse in a different way than most stories do.
“The draw of the multiverse is that you get to play with different aspects of familiar things,” Kirkman explained. “It’s just a really easy button to push: ‘OK, we can bring in these Fox characters that everybody remembers. We can have a digital cameo of Christopher Reeve. We’re going to take this thing that’s popular because it’s a nostalgia thing and then amp the nostalgia up even more.’ I consider myself in that fanbase, so I see why it’s so popular.
“The only thing I’ll say is, what we’re doing is a little bit different. We’re using the multiverse to examine Mark’s character and what aspects of him we may not necessarily be aware of yet. It’s much more of a character-based story. I mean, we don’t have the luxury of bringing in the Invincible from the popular 1990s cartoon. If we did, we probably would.”
What was Invincible Season 1 about?
Invincible Season 1 centered around Mark Grayson, a 17-year-old boy who begins to develop superpowers like super strength, flight, and super speed. He then begins to train to use his abilities under the guidance of his father, Nolan Grayson, who is one of the most powerful superheroes on Earth, Omni-Man. The new season is set to premiere on Friday, November 3, on Prime Video.
