Hulu has released the trailer for Faraway Downs, a reimagining of Baz Luhrmann’s 2008 film Australia starring Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman. All episodes stream on November 26, 2023, on Hulu.
Luhrmann recut the 165-minute film into six chapters, which include additional footage and a new ending. Faraway Downs still features Kidman’s Lady Sarah Ashley, an English aristocrat, and Jackman’s The Drover, an experienced cattle drover. However, the series will now be told through the eyes of Nullah (Brandon Walters).

What to Expect in Faraway Downs?
“The story centers on an English aristocrat, Lady Sarah Ashley (Nicole Kidman) who travels halfway across the world to confront her wayward husband and sell an unusual asset: a million-acre cattle ranch in the Australian Outback called Faraway Downs. Following the death of her husband, a ruthless Australian cattle baron, King Carney (Bryan Brown), plots to take her land and she reluctantly joins forces with a rough-hewn cattle drover (Hugh Jackman) to protect her ranch,” says the synopsis.
“The sweeping adventure romance is explored through the eyes of young Nullah (Brandon Walters), a bi-racial Indigenous Australian child caught up in the government’s draconian racial policy now referred to as the ‘Stolen Generations.’ Together the trio experiences four life-altering years, a love affair between Lady Ashley and the Drover, and the unavoidable impact of World War II on Northern Australia.”
Besides Kidman, Jackman, and Walters, Faraway Downs will feature other prominent characters from Australia, including Bryan Brown as King Carney and Ben Mendelsohn as Captain Dutton.
Luhrmann directs Faraway Down and will executive produce alongside Catherine Martin, Schuyler Weiss, and Catherine Knapman. Martin received an Academy Award nomination for Best Costume Design for her work on Australia.
Faraway Downs will have its world premiere at the inaugural SXSW Sydney Screen Festival on October 21.
