Netflix has announced that the long-awaited second season of South Korean fantasy thriller Hellbound is in production.
Complete with a video announcement, Netflix revealed the creatives working on the show’s second season. The news comes after over two years since the first season premiered on the streaming service on September 9, 2021.
“Welcome Back to a Whole New Hell”
Directed and created by Yeon Sang-ho based on his webtoon of the same name, Hellbound centers on Earth’s alternate version, wherein otherworldly creatures abruptly appear to send individuals to eternal damnation.
The show became Netflix’s second breakout South Korean series in 2021 following the immediate success of Squid Game. Further details about what Season 2 entails remain up in the air, but it was reported that the staff behind the hit series will expand the story built on Season 1. Furthermore, according to Netflix Korea’s official press release, the upcoming season will explore “the themes of mortality, sin, and justice with greater scale and depth.”
Season 1 stars Yoo Ah-in (#Alive) as a cult leader named Jeong Jin-soo, Kim Hyun-joo (Boys Over Flowers) as attorney Min Hye-jin, Yang Ik-june (Canola) as detective Jin Kyeong-hoon, Park Jeong-min (Reply 1988) as broadcasting director Bae Young-jae, and Won Jin-ah (Life) as Young-jae’s wife Song So-hyun. Sweet Home actor Kim Sung-cheol is on board to portray Jin-soo, Yoo’s character.
The series debuted to critical acclaim, obtaining a 97% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes as of this writing. It also received various nominations and accolades, with Kim Shin-rok bagging three awards in the Best Supporting Actress category. She also received a Best New Actress award at South Korea’s 20th Director’s Cut Awards.
The rest of the Season 1 cast includes Kim Do-yoon, Lee Re, Ryu Kyung-soo, Kim Mi-soo, and Lee Dong-hee.
