Cruel Intentions TV Series Ordered at Amazon

According to TVLine, Amazon has officially granted an 8-episode series order to the upcoming adaptation of Cruel Intentions, based on Roger Kumble’s 1999 cult classic movie of the same name. The project was initially developed as a Freevee series. However, the outlet’s sources note that Amazon may potentially decide to move the Cruel Intentions series to Prime Video instead.

The TV adaptation will be written and created by Phoebe Fisher and Sara Goodman. Production is expected to begin this early June in Toronto. Further details about its cast are still being kept under wraps.

“Set in Washington, D.C., the Cruel Intentions series follows two ruthless step-siblings who will do anything to stay at the top of the Greek Life hierarchy at their elite college,” reads the synopsis. “When a brutal hazing incident threatens the entire Panhellenic system, they’ll do whatever is necessary to preserve their power and reputations… including seducing the daughter of the U.S. vice president.”

The project is being executive produced by original movie producer Neal H. Moritz for Original Film along with Pavun Shetty, Andrea Iervolino, and Monica Bacardi of Iervolino & Lady Bacardi Entertainment, and Bruce Mellon. It is a production by Sony Pictures Television, Amazon Studios, and Original Film.

The 1999 movie was a modern retelling of the 1782 French novel Les Liaisons dangereuses. It starred Sarah Michelle Gellar as Kathryn Merteuil, Ryan Philippe as Sebastian Valmont, Reese Witherspoon as Annette Hargrove, and Selma Blair as Cecile Caldwell.
