Following the conclusion of the first season of HBO’s adaptation of The Last of Us, show creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann promise a lot more to come in the second season of the series.
In an interview with Variety, Mazin said that he knows some fans of the show have been clamoring for more infected and more action in the series. To those fans, Mazin said there will be “a lot more infected,” as well as different kinds of them.
“There is more The Last of Us to come,” Mazin stated. “It’s quite possible that there will be a lot more infected later. And perhaps different kinds.”
Without getting into spoilers for the second season of the series, if the game is sticking as closely to The Last of Us Part II as possible, then there will certainly be new infected — including some particularly monstrous ones.
Earlier this week, it was also revealed that the second season of The Last of Us would be split into multiple seasons. In a separate interview with GQ, Mazin cited the reason for that to simply be that the second game is significantly bigger. Similar to this season of the show, Mazin also said that some things will be different in the second season, while some will remain the same.
“I think we know what we’re doing on this one,” said Mazin. “I’m not saying that in snarky way, I’m saying that in a hopeful way. There are going to be things that are going to be different, and there are things that are going to be identical. There are things that are going to be added and enriched. There are some things that are going to be flipped.
“Our goal remains exactly what it was for the first season, which is to deliver a show that makes fans happy. We’ve got an incredible returning cast. It’s a daunting task. But Jesus, so was the first season. You can’t make everyone happy. But we’ve made a lot of people happy and that’s our intention to do it again.”
