Late last year, it was revealed that a television series based on the God of War video game franchise would be coming to Amazon’s Prime Video. Now President of Sony Pictures Television Studios Katherine Pope has promised the series would be sticking to the game for the most part.
Pope gave an update on what fans can expect from the Prime Video series and revealed that work on the project had begun. She also noted that it would be “keeping all the values of the game,” but also expanding them where necessary.
“We’re working on God of War, the PlayStation title, which is still in the early stages,” said Pope to Deadline. “I know the game pretty well, and I’m so impressed with what they’re already doing in terms of building out that world and expanding, keeping all the values of the game but also expanding it so that if you don’t know the game, it’s still going to be a really satisfying show on its own.”
While it’s still early on in the development phase, fans are anxiously awaiting what a potential God of War series could look like, especially following the massive success that HBO has had adapting The Last of Us into a television series.
The series will see Rafe Judkins (The Wheel of Time) serve as showrunner, while Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby (Iron Man, The Expanse) will serve as writers and executive producers alongside Judkins.
While originally set in ancient Greece and dealing with Greek mythology, the last two releases moved Kratos to a new setting and dealt with Norse mythology. The latest releases had a much more mature storyline and grappled with the God of War becoming a father. God of War Ragnarök was released in November to critical praise (check out our review).
