Grounded: Xbox Survival Game Getting an Animated Series Adaptation

Obsidian Entertainment and Xbox have announced that they’re currently developing an animated series adaptation of the survival video game Grounded. The project hails from Star Wars: Clone Wars writer Brent Friedman.

Grounded has caught the imagination of millions of people and we’ve learned that the biggest fans want even more of that world,” game director Adam Brennecke said in a statement. “This partnership will allow us to give fans more Grounded while expanding the world that so many have come to love.”

Inspired by the Disney films A Bug’s Life and Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, the Grounded series is set to exist in the same universe as the game, which was first released for PC and Xbox One through early access in 2020. It is expected to have a full release this coming September.

“In the animated series, the summer before high school, four friends plan ‘big things’ to elevate their social standing, but their plans are upended when they stumble upon shrinking technology that makes them two inches tall,” reads the synopsis. “Now the four shrunken friends must learn to survive in a towering backyard that’s a jungle full of enormous predators and hiding a vast corporate conspiracy threatening their entire town.”

“The idea that our greatest and most profound adventures are all around us, hiding in plain sight on some microcosmic level is just pure child-like genius,” Tarik Heitmann of Kinetic Media said. “We knew immediately that we wanted to be part of Grounded‘s journey beyond the gaming space.”

The Grounded series will also be produced by Waterproof Studios/SC Productions, Kinetic Media, and Bardel Entertainment. It will be directed by Brien Goodrich from a screenplay by Brent Friedman.
