The Duffer Brothers Announce Stranger Things Stage Play and Production Company

The creative duo of Matt and Ross Duffer — also known as The Duffer Brothers — have formed Upside Down Pictures, a new production company to develop film and television projects as part of their overall deal with Netflix. This announcement comes in conjunction with a new Stranger Things stage play and spin-off series.

The company will be run by Hilary Leavitt, a veteran of BBC America and MRC who has been running Hulu’s Blazer production banner, and has also helped develop several hit series including Orphan Black, Ozark, The Great, and Shining Girls.

According to the brothers (via Deadline), the company will strive to make “stories that take place at that beautiful crossroads where the ordinary meets the extraordinary, where big spectacle co-exists with intimate character work, where heart wins out over cynicism.”

The production company’s first task will be working on the fifth and final season of Stranger Things, but after that, they’ll be working on a ton of new Stranger Things-related ideas, including a new stage play set within the world and mythology of Stranger Things produced by prolific U.K.-based stage producer Sonia Friedman, Stephen Daldry, and Netflix. It’s unclear where and when the stage play will take place, so fans may have to wait a bit for more information.

Alongside the stage play, the recently announced Stranger Things spin-off series for Netflix will also be produced by Upside Down in conjunction with 21 Laps. Currently, it’s unknown exactly what the spin-off will feature, but The Duffer Brothers have said in the past that the spin-off will be “1000% different” from the original series and likely won’t feature any connection to the original cast.
