According to Variety, HBO has officially decided not to renew Crystal Moselle’s coming-of-age comedy series Betty for a third season. The cancellation comes after over a month since the female-led skateboarding series had concluded its six-episode second season.
“We will not be moving forward with a third season of ‘Betty,’” HBO said in a statement. “We are very grateful for the collaboration with Crystal and our incredible cast — their fearless exploration of the world of New York City’s skate culture will remain a beautiful emblem of friendship and community.”

Set against the backdrop of New York City, Betty revolved around a diverse group of young women navigating their lives through the predominantly male-oriented world of skateboarding. The series was based on Crystal Moselle’s acclaimed 2018 film Skate Kitchen, which was also inspired by the lead stars’ real-life all-female skate crew in New York.
The series featured the return of the original film’s five leads Dede Lovelace, Ajani Russell, Moonbear, Rachel Vinberg, and Nina Moran as they’ve reprise their respective roles as Janay, Indigo, Honeybear, Camille, and Kirt.
The final season was set in in the last chapter of 2020, where it captured the pandemic in New York City, where masks and outside activities are the norm.

Betty was created and executive produced by Crystal Moselle, who also served as the director. The first season was well-received by critics and was even nominated at the Gotham Independent Film Awards for Breakthrough Series – Shortform.
