Los Angeles Lakers Comedy Series Coming to Netflix

Netflix has recently given a straight-to-series order to a comedy set in the front office of the Los Angeles Lakers franchise, according to a report from Variety.

The series will come from writer Elaine Ko and be executive produced by Mindy Kaling. It’s inspired by the personal and professional dynamic between the family owners and front office team that run one of the biggest sports franchises in the world. Billed as a half-hour workplace comedy, the series will follow fictional team governor Eliza Reed as she navigates NBA ownership and family drama with her best friend by her side. 

According to the report, Netflix has given the series a 10-episode order, with Ko set to act as writer, executive producer, and showrunner. Kaling will be on board as executive producer under her Kaling International banner, and real-life president of the Lakers Jeanie Buss will also serve as executive producer, along with Lakers executive director Linda Rambis and Howard Klein of 3 Arts.

The series is just the latest in entertainment news centered on the Los Angeles Lakers. Recently, Hulu announced that it would be releasing a nine-part docuseries chronicling the history of the basketball team and HBO has a drama series in development as well.
