According to Deadline, Emmy winner Kate McKinnon has officially vacated the leading role in Hulu’s long-in development limited series titled The Dropout which will chronicle the rise and fallen of once-rising entrepreneur Elizabeth Holmes. Her exit comes after nearly two years since the project was granted a straight-to-series order by the streamer. The production of the series is expected to begin this summer with castings for a new lead actress already underway.

Based on the ABC News/ABC Radio’s podcast, The Dropout will explore Elizabeth Holmes and her company Theranos in an “unbelievable tale of ambition and fame gone terribly wrong.” The woman who was once called the next Steve Jobs built an empire and then watched it crumble right before her eyes after being exposed as a “massive fraud.” Holmes and her former chief operating officer were ultimately indicted “on nine counts of wire fraud and two counts of conspiracy to commit wire fraud for distributing blood tests with falsified results to consumers.”
The Dropout podcast host and creator Rebecca Jarvis will executive produce alongside McKinnon, while Taylor Dunn and Victoria Thompson will produce the series.

McKinnon gained recognition as a current member of Saturday Night Live, where she has earned eight consecutive Emmy nominations and winning two for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. She will next be seen in NBCUniversal’s upcoming Joe Exotic limited series, portraying the role of Carole Baskin.
