Tim Burton Developing Live-Action The Addams Family Series

Tim Burton Developing Live-Action The Addams Family Series

While the kooky family are busy killing it at the box office and prepping for a 2021 animated return, The Addams Family is getting ready to head to the small screen once again as Tim Burton (Edward Scissorhands) is helping develop a new live-action adaptation of the Charles Addams-created comic strip, according to Deadline.

The series, which is set to be written and showrun by Smallville alums Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, is reported set to bring the family in to the modern day and would center on young Wednesday Addams and her view on the world of 2020. In addition to writing and showrunning, Gough and Millar are set to executive produce the project alongside Burton, who is currently in negotiations to executive produce the series as well as possibly directing all episodes of the update, while MGM TV, who owns the rights to the franchise, are attached to produce.

Burton signing on for the series seems like a match made in gothic heaven, with the Oscar-nominated writer/director having received acclaim over the years for his dark atmosphere throughout his works including in BeetlejuiceEdward Scissorhands and Dark Shadows.

Burton was even at one point developing his own film adaptation in the early 2010s in the form of a stop-motion outing on which he would co-write, co-produce and direct at Universal Pictures’ Illumination Entertainment, though after three years of languishing in development hell it was eventually scrapped. He was also set to helm the 1991 Raul Julia and Anjelica Huston-starring film, though was forced to pass due to scheduling conflicts with Batman Returns.

The Addams Family series will also mark Burton’s first major foray into live-action television after helping develop and executive produce the animated series adaptation of his 1988 hit movie Beetlejuice.
