According to Deadline, The Night Of actress Poorna Jagannathan has been cast as a series regular in Mindy Kaling and Lang Fisher (Brooklyn Nine-Nine)’s forthcoming coming-of-age comedy series for Netflix.
Jagannathan is best known for her role as Safar Khan in HBO’s The Night Of. Her other TV credits include: Royal Pains, House of Cards, Gypsy, Sorry for Your Loss and Big Little Lies.

Jagannathan will be joining previously announced cast member Canadian newcomer Maitreyi Ramakrishan, who is set to lead the series as Devi, described as an overachieving high school sophomore with a short fuse. Jagannathan will be portraying Devi’s mom named Nalini.
The untitled series is co-created and co-written by Kaling and Fisher. Inspired by Kaling’s own childhood, the 10-episode series will follow the complicated life of a modern-day first-generation Indian American teenage girl. 3 Arts’ Howard Klein and David Miner will be executive producing along with Kaling and Fisher, who are also set to be the series’ showrunners. The project will mark the second collaboration between Kaling and Fisher, who have both worked on the romantic-comedy series The Mindy Project.

Kaling is best known for her work as an actor, writer, director and producer in comedy TV shows such as The Office opposite Steve Carell and John Krasinski; and The Mindy Project starring alongside Chris Messina (Birds of Prey), Ed Weeks and Anna Camp. Her writing for The Office earned her an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series.
