Denis Villenueve's Dune Moved Back One Month

Dune: The Sisterhood Gets a Series Order From WarnerMedia

With Warner Bros. sitting out this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, it’s going to be a while before fans see footage from the upcoming Dune remake. Regardless, the studio appears committed to developing a shared universe based on author Frank Herbert’s series of novels. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Legendary Television is already working on a TV series called Dune: The Sisterhood.

As the name suggests, the new show will focus on the Bene Gesserit, an ancient order of women that factors heavily into Herbert’s books. Its members are trained to have complete mastery over their minds and bodies. They also gain a heightened sense of perception and use their abilities to guide humanity along a path of their own design.

Dune director Denis Villeneuve will also helm The Sisterhood’s pilot episode from a screenplay by co-writer Jon Spaihts. They will produce the venture with Brian Herbert, Byron Merritt and Kim Herbert for the Frank Herbert estate. Kevin J. Anderson, who co-authored additional Dune novels with Brian Herbert, is co-producing the new series. The show will premiere on WarnerMedia’s still-unnamed streaming service, which is still without a launch date.

Lady Jessica (mother of Paul Atreides) and the Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam are among the Bene Gesserit who feature prominently in Herbert’s original novel. Rebecca Ferguson and Charlotte Rampling will assume those roles in next year’s remake. It’s unclear if those characters will cross over from Villeneuve’s film to the new TV series. However, it would certainly be a fun way to tie these projects together.

“The Bene Gesserit have always been fascinating to me,” said Villeneuve in a statement. “Focusing a series around that powerful order of women seemed not only relevant and inspiring but a dynamic setting for the television series.”
