Netflix Musical Drama Mixtape Lands Paul James as Lead

The upcoming Netflix musical drama Mixtape has landed Paul James as its leading man. Deadline reports that The Path actor will play the role of Sam, a would-be songwriter, closet romantic and young widower who is dedicated to the wellbeing of his only son.

The role was originally played by Atypical actor Raul Castillo in the pilot for Fox. However, when Netflix decided to acquire the series, it meant that recasting was inevitable. The show also stars Jenna Dewan (Step Up), Callie Hernandez (Under the Silver Lake) and Campbell Scott (House of Cards) and Madeline Stowe (12 Monkeys).

Mixtape was created by former Smash showrunner Josh Safran, a romantic musical drama that looks at the love stories connecting a diverse, disparate group of people in contemporary Los Angeles through the music that lives inside their hearts and minds.

The show is a joint production between Annapurna Television, 20th Century Fox TV and Fox 21 TV Studios. Safran will write as well as serve as executive producer alongside Annapurna’s Megan Ellison and Sue Naegle as well as Ali Krug. The 10-episode series was officially acquired over the summer. At this time, no release date has been announced.

James can also be seen in the upcoming sci-fi thriller The Hot Zone alongside Game of Thrones’ Liam Cunningham.
