Mr. Mercedes Renewed for Season 3 by Audience Network

Mr. Mercedes, inspired by the book trilogy by Stephen King, has been renewed for a third season at AT&T’s Audience Network, Variety has confirmed.

Executive producer Jack Bender is returning to direct with David E. Kelley coming back to oversee the writer’s room. Production on Season 3 is scheduled to begin in Charleston, South Carolina in early 2019. The 10-episode season will premiere later next year.

“Mr. Mercedes has resonated with such a wide audience, so we’re thrilled to bring it back for a third season for our customers,” Daniel York, senior executive vice president and chief content officer for AT&T, told the outlet. “David E. Kelley, Jack Bender, and Sonar have crafted a series that honors the original work by Stephen King and we can’t wait to see where they take the show in a ‘post-Mr. Mercedes world.’”

Based on the Stephen King novel of the same name, the first season followed a retired detective, Bill Hodges, haunted by the case of a killer, Brady Hartsfield, who murdered 16 people in a stolen Mercedes and who remains undiscovered two years later, only for the killer to reemerge and begin taunting the detective, leading the two to engage in a deadly game of cat and mouse.

Mr. Mercedes Season 2 takes place a year after Hartsfield’s thwarted attempt to perpetrate a second mass murder in the community of Bridgton, Ohio. Since the incident, Hartsfield has been hospitalized in a vegetative state. Hodges has done his best to move on from his Brady obsession, teaming up with Holly Gibney to open Finders Keepers, a private investigative agency. But when unexplainable occurrences begin to affect hospital staff members attending to Brady, Hodges is haunted by the feeling that Brady is somehow responsible.

The original cast, including Brendan Gleeson (In Bruges) as Hodges, Harry Treadaway (Penny Dreadful) as Hartsfield, returned for the 10-episode second season along with newcomers Jack Huston (Boardwalk Empire), Tessa Ferrer (Grey’s Anatomy) and Maximiliano Hernandez (Sicario).

Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey of Temple Hill Entertainment will executive produce the third season of the Sonar Entertainment series alongside Tom Lesinski and Jenna Santoianni of Sonar Entertainment, as well as Shane Elrod and Kate Regan of Audience Network.
