Variety has brought word that Netflix has ordered a 10-part series adaptation of the John Marrs best-selling novel The One in cooperation with the U.K.-based production company Urban Myth Films.

Based on the novel of the same name, the series is set five minutes into the future in which scientists have perfected using DNA testing to find people their ideal life partner, but even with these seemingly perfect matchings, there are some that still hold secrets. The series will explore some pairings that hold shocking secrets with deadly consequences, as well as the moral ambiguities that go into DNA-based pairing.
The adaptation is being developed by Urban Myth’s Howard Overman, well-known for his work creating the acclaimed British sci-fi series Misfits, which gave a jump start to the careers of Iwan Rheon (Game of Thrones), Robert Sheehan (Mortal Engines) and Joseph Gilgun (Preacher). The One will be executive produced Johnny Capps and Julian Murphy as well as Studiocanal.

This adaptation marks another major pick up in the genre for Netflix after the modern-day adaptation of War of the Worlds, which is currently in pre-production in Europe and Africa, as well as animated adaptations of Pacific Rim and the Netflix original series Altered Carbon, and the universe based on the novel “Recursion” from TV superstar producer Shonda Rhimes (How to Get Away with Murder) and War for the Planet of the Apes‘ Matt Reeves.
