Earlier this month, the second season of the Castlevania animated series premiered on Netflix. Now, a report on The Wrap indicates that Castlevania producer Adi Shankar may follow that show with a Legend of Zelda series.
According to The Wrap, Shankar is currently in negotiations to produce The Legend of Zelda as a series. Nintendo declined to comment for the report. Shankar did confirm that his next project is a video game adaptation. On his Instagram, Shankar indicated that Castlevania‘s success “created this opportunity.” He added that an announcement may be made on November 16.

The report doesn’t indicate whether the Zelda series would be live-action or animated, but Shankar’s track record suggests animation is more likely. In 1989, The Legend of Zelda animated series ran for a single season. But ever since the Super Mario Bros. live-action movie, Nintendo has largely avoided Hollywood adaptations of its games. Previous rumors indicated that Netflix was interested in adapting the franchise, but nothing was ever confirmed.
In the mid ’80s, Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka created the original Legend of Zelda. The game was one of the breakout hits for the Nintendo Entertainment System, and the Zelda series has become one of Nintendo’s most successful franchises. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, was released in 2017 to critical and fan acclaim. Perhaps the potential Zelda series will use that game as its primary inspiration.
