ComingSoon Senior Editor Brandon Schreur participated in a roundtable interview with Cobra Kai star Ralph Macchio. Macchio discussed filming one of the entire show’s most emotional scenes alongside Mary Mouser, who plays Samantha LaRusso.
“After a shocking result in the Sekai Taikai, Miyagi-Do, and Cobra Kai must reckon with their pasts while facing an uncertain future both on and off the mat,” the synopsis for Cobra Kai Season 6 Part 3 reads. “Almost 40 years after the events of the 1984 All Valley Karate Tournament, it’s all been leading to this.”
Cobra Kai Season 6 Part 3 is now streaming on Netflix.
Brandon Schreur: I think one of the biggest, most emotional moments in this new batch of Cobra Kai episodes is right there at the end when you’re saying goodbye to Mary Mouser’s character at the airport. You’ve been working with her for so long, and it is such an emotional moment. I’m just wondering if that was emotional for you, too, to film that scene and say goodbye like that.
Ralph Macchio: One hundred percent. You know, Mary and our connection from her audition — I always joke with her that she had me at hello. It was just one of those things where there was instant chemistry. I had an instant affinity for her, and I assume it’s a two-way street, you can ask her [laughs].
You know, we’ve become friends. She’s friends with my kids. And that’s true for all the actors, all the young actors in the show. But that’s probably one of my favorite moments in the series, certainly in this season, because I think it’s pure and true and genuine and honest. It’s so great to hear from you that you felt that. As a parent, I’ve had those scenes where I drop my kid off at school, get in the car, and start crying on the way out. You try to be strong.
But it was really quite beautiful. Something I love about the Cobra Kai series is that, as big and as insane as it gets sometimes, it’s still grounded in those human elements. And that’s what’s relatable. Thanks for bringing that up. I was really proud to see how that scene turned out. And everyone in it, among many other scenes.
Thanks to Ralph Macchio for discussing Cobra Kai.
