Obi-Wan Kenobi Explained: What Happened in the Series Finale?

With the official release of “Part VI,” Obi-Wan Kenobi has concluded its run on Disney+. The six-episode series debuted on May 27 and focused on the titular Jedi Master in the aftermath of Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith. In addition to Kenobi, the show brought back many familiar faces — besides a pretty famous mask — and introduced new compelling characters.

Let’s see what happened in the Obi-Wan Kenobi finale, which featured some interesting Easter eggs.

Who Won the Duel Between Kenobi and Darth Vader?

In their second one-on-one duel in the series, Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) bested Darth Vader. The Obi-Wan Kenobi finale featured another battle between the titular character and his former Padawan, Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen). To buy some time for the Rebels to escape from the Star Destroyer, Kenobi drew Vader on a seemingly uninhabited planet. Once there, the pair locked lightsabers once again. The first part of the battle saw Vader almost killing his former friend, who was still haunted by the ghosts of his past. Once Kenobi forgave himself for his failure as a master, he resumed the duel and damaged Vader’s breathing device. The Sith Lord could not continue after the blow and confronted Kenobi by saying that Anakin was dead for good. Kenobi then left his enemy behind, opting to spare his life.

Does the Emperor Appear in Obi-Wan Kenobi?

The rumors were true as Emperor Sheev Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid) does appear in Obi-Wan Kenobi as a hologram. After losing the duel with Kenobi, Vader returned to his fortress on Mustafar. There, he had a chat with Darth Sidious, who was questioning the heart of his apprentice. Vader quickly explained that he had no more feelings for Kenobi and only served the Dark Side.

What Happened to Reva?

After confronting Kenobi and turning on Vader in “Part V,” Reva (Moses Ingram) overheard a message that urged the Jedi Master to return to Tatooine. The Third Sister guessed something big was at stake, and she went there herself. On Tatooine, Reva fought Owen Lars and his wife, Beru, before pursuing Luke Skywalker into the desert. Once there, she couldn’t bring herself to kill him as the images of Anakin assassinating Jedi younglings came back to her mind. After returning Luke to his family, she was congratulated by Kenobi for having chosen to leave the Dark Side behind.

Is That Qui-Gon Jinn?

Yes, Kenobi’s master made a cameo in the series finale. Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson) returned as Force spirit to encourage his former apprentice. It is the first live-action appearance of Jinn since his death in Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace. However, he already appeared as a spirit in a few Star Wars: The Clone Wars episodes besides being mentioned countless times in many installments in the Star Wars franchise.

Will There Be an Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 2?

No, there won’t be a sophomore season of Obi-Wan Kenobi. Not for now, at least. Lucasfilm presented the show as a one-off limited series, and it reaches a natural ending point here. There have been rumors about producers exploring the possibility of another season, but nothing has been officially announced yet. Of course, Lucasfilm may always change its mind and greenlight a Season 2, especially if the fans are vocal about it. The good news is that almost all the cast is on board with reprising their roles again.
