HBO’s His Dark Materials Season 2 began just where the first season left off. Lyra and Will had both gone through the tears in their worlds. In His Dark Materials Season 2 Episode 1, Lyra and Will met in an empty city, and Mrs. Coulter tortured a captured witch for information.
Cittàgazze
Lyra and Pan found themselves in a jungle-like wilderness, but they saw the city in the sky in the distance. The city appeared abandoned, but she encountered Will Parry, who was also from another world. His unfamiliarity with daemons and surprise at Pan’s ability to talk puzzled her. The two of them encounter two other children. They explain that the adults abandoned the city after a Spectre attack. Only adults could see and be harmed by Spectres. They left adults soulless.
Will made Lyra an omelet, and Lyra tried to return the favor. The two decided to stick together. She explained that she was trying to find answers and learn about Dust. Will and Lyra realized they were both from places called Oxford in their respective worlds. Lyra used the alethiometer to ask about Will and learned that he was a murderer. The episode ended with Will staring up at a pointy tower as a Spectre appeared behind him.
Scoresby and Serafina
Lee and Hester traveled in the balloon to see Serafina and the witches. He told them of his plan to find Stanislaus Grumman. Serafina equipped him with a way to call her to him. Ruta Skadi arrived, interrupting the meeting, to tell her of a captured witch, Katja Sirkka. Ruta left to find her.
“The Prophecy Has Started”
Cardinal Sturrock refused to acknowledge the obvious tear in their world, insisting that it was heresy. The Magisterium had Katja on their submarine, and Mrs. Coulter volunteered to make her talk. She tortured Katja. Though she insisted she’d remain loyal, Katja divulged to Mrs. Coulter that a prophecy that couldn’t be stopped regarding Lyra has already started.
Ruta flew into the submarine and killed Katja, who welcomed death. She fought the Magisterium soldiers and stabbed Cardinal Sturrock in the chest before escaping. Mrs. Coulter convinced Father MacPhail to let her attend to Cardinal Sturrock, a euphemism for killing him for the survival of the Magisterium. She insisted that it would free her to continue work that didn’t concern him.
