In the previous episode of HBO’s Lovecraft Country, Captain Lancaster cursed Diana, and it caught up to her. In Lovecraft Country Season 1 Episode 9, Christina buys some time, and Hippolyta returns with a plan.
Rewind and Reset
Ruby brought Christina to see Dee. She concluded the curse came from both Titus’ and Horatio’s pages. Only Captain Lancaster could remove the curse, but they had witnessed him getting blown up. Christina would help reset the curse, but they needed the blood of her closest relative, and she would only agree if Atticus came willingly to Ardham for the autumnal equinox. Montrose confessed to Tic that he could be George’s son. However, Hippolyta arrived just in time to help. Christina successfully reset the curse, giving them twenty-four hours.
As William, Christina went to the Chicago Lodge to find Captain Lancaster. The usual spell they would use, replacing his injured parts with those of black men, wasn’t working. Christina revealed the talisman reversing the spell. Lancaster died.
Tulsa 1921
Hippolyta drove them to the observatory to use the multiverse machine. She plugged into herself to help find Tulsa of that universe in 1921. They were going to retrieve the Book of Names before Tic’s mother, Dora’s house burned down during the massacre.
Montrose’s father saved Leti and brought her into Dora’s house. They armed themselves, and Dora’s sister confessed to Leti that she was jealous that Dora was going to prom with George Freeman. While left alone, Leti searched the house but couldn’t find it. Dora’s grandmother found her, and Leti convinced her that she was from the future and needed the Book of Names. She handed over the Book to Leti, who stayed with her as the house burned down.
“I Got You, Kid”
Atticus, Montrose, and Leti watched as Montrose’s father beat Young Montrose with a switch in front of the house. Dora came out to protect Montrose as George came out ready to take Dora to the prom. Unfortunately, the prom had been canceled.
Tic followed Montrose, who wanted to stop the death of his friend and first love, Thomas. However, Tic couldn’t let Montrose change the future. Thomas died as he was supposed to, but they realized that Atticus was the stranger that saved Montrose, George, and Dora with a bat, swinging like Jackie Robinson.
Montrose and Tic made it back to the hotel where Hippolyta was struggling to hold the portal open. Tic went back through the portal and encouraged Hippolyta, whose hair turned blue in the effort. Leti walked through explosions as she approached with the Book. They all made it back safely.
