In the previous episode of HBO’s His Dark Materials, Lyra recruited an aeronaut, Lee Scoresby, and an armored bear, Iorek Byrnison, to help on the journey to Bolvangar. In His Dark Materials Season 1 Episode 5, Lyra and Iorek went in search for a ghost, while we’re introduced to Will, John Parry’s son.
“I Trust It”
Lyra told Farder Coram that the alethiometer wanted her to go to a fishing village in the next valley. She believed that there was a ghost there. Coram believed they needed her alethiometer skills with the rest of the Gyptians. She spoke to Ma Costa, and Kaisa’s assurance that it was the right thing convinced her to give permission. Lyra went to John Faa, who made her promise to be back by the next day.
Serafina visited Farder Coram. Though he had aged, she didn’t appear to. She was 300 years old, and his aging didn’t bother her. Serafina supported Lyra’s journey and promised Coram that she would be watching out for them through Kaisa. She would help them when they needed it, but Serafina warned that not all the witches agreed with her.
In Exile
Iorek was Lyra and Pan’s companion on her journey. While they stopped to eat, Lyra told Iorek that her father was imprisoned in Svalbard. He warned her that Svalbard bears couldn’t be tricked, but Lyra believed that Asriel would find a way to get away. Iorek explained that he was a prince in exile for killing another bear.
Dear Son
The fishing village was abandoned. Lyra arrived at the place where the alethiometer wanted her to go. She feared it, and Pan wanted to go back. However, she pressed forward and found Billy inside. He was weak and without his daemon, Ratter. Iorek brought Lyra and Billy back to the Gyptians. Alone with Billy and Tony, Ma assured Billy that he could go be with his daemon. Billy died, and the Gyptians held a funeral for him where John led a somber dirge.
That night, hooded figures infiltrated the Gyptian camp and kidnapped Lyra. Lyra lied about her name to Dr. Cooper, who noted her age and ordered her to be prepped for treatment right away. Lyra saw a jumpsuit similar to Billy’s. They had taken her to Bolvangar.
Elaine and Will Parry
The Pale-Faced Man brought Boreal to the Parry residence. Elaine, John’s wife, appeared to have mental health issues, and Will was a pariah at school. Boreal approached Elaine and claimed to be a friend of John’s from the military. Elaine told him that he’d died on an expedition in Alaska thirteen years ago. The encounter troubled her, so she went to Will’s boxing practice.
At home, Elaine was convinced that someone had been in the house. She made sure that letters from John were still there. Will saw them for the first time and wanted to read them. Elaine eventually told them that he could, but he thought better of it. While locking up the house, Elaine saw the Pale-Faced Man watching her.
Thomas told Boreal that John had set up an account to provide a monthly stipend to Elaine and Will. He had known that he’d be gone a long time.
