In the previous episode of HBO’s His Dark Materials, a Gobbler captured Lyra after she ran away from Mrs. Coulter. In His Dark Materials Season 1 Episode 3, the Gyptians found Lyra, and Boreal learned more about that man known as Grumman.
The Truth
The Gyptians, including Tony Costa, captured the Gobbler that had taken Lyra and freed her from the back of the truck. Ma Costa took her in. The Magisterium authorities boarded the Gyptian boats, looking for her, but she evaded detection. She asked Ma why no one would tell her the truth. Ma finally explained that Mrs. Coulter was her mother. Lyra was born out of an affair she had with Lord Asriel that resulted in Edward Coulter’s death.
At a Gyptian meeting, they debated on whether to fight the Magisterium or stand down. After a rousing speech from Lyra, they resolved to fight. That night, Tony snuck out with Benjamin. He told Lyra that they would be going to Mrs. Coulter’s. Lyra told him where her study was and to check the drawer in desk. Tony made it out through the window with a list of children, including Billy. Benjamin wasn’t so lucky. He refused to rat out his family, so he jumped into the elevator shaft and died.
Farder Coram explained how the alethiometer worked after she was able to get it to move by clearing her mind. Setting the hands to point at symbols representing the question resulted in an answer that needed to be interpreted. Lyra guessed which symbols represented Benjamin, and she was able to interpret that he had died. Tony made it back, without Benjamin. Farder convinced John Faa that she would be valuable because she could read the alethiometer without books to translate the result.
Spy Bugs
With the help of Magisterium forces, Mrs. Coulter went to Jordan College to find Lyra. The Master told her Lyra wasn’t there. They found books for translating the alethiometer. Mrs. Coulter deduced that he possessed an illegal alethiometer. The Master told her that Lyra arrived with one, and he simply gave it back to her when she left.
While drunk on her balcony, Mrs. Coulter released Spy Bugs to find Lyra. The Gyptians caught and destroyed one, but the one that attacked Pan got away. It told Mrs. Coulter it had seen Lyra.
Col. John Parry
Borreal went back to the modern world. Thomas showed him the information that he found. Grumman was Col. John Parry. He was of Thomas’s world, not Borreal’s. Borreal wondered how Grumman had acquired a daemon if that were true. Thomas shared information with Borreal on the family that Parry left behind. Borreal enlisted the help of a pale-faced man to track down Parry’s family.
