In the previous episode of NBC’s This Is Us, Malik told Deja about his daughter, and Kevin met Cassidy at Nicky’s vet center. In This Is Us Season 4 Episode 4, Kate and Toby took Jack to a music class for babies, and Beth held the grand opening of her dance school.
Music Class
Kate wanted Jack to be able to make music, so she took him to a music class for newborns and up of all abilities. However, the teacher didn’t know that Jack was blind, and because they were late, Jack hadn’t acclimated to the space yet. The music class provided too much stimuli and upset Jack.
On the car ride home, Kate blamed Toby for them being late. She brought up his sneaking off to work out. Kate asked Toby to keep driving to calm Jack down. They ended up on the coast, and Kate suggested they go to the beach. They introduced Jack to the sounds and feel of the ocean.
That Scene
Kevin learned that The Manny was canceled and thought about shooting the pilot. That day, he’d questioned if he should be an actor. Kevin took Nicky to an AA meeting, but Cassidy was already there, upset. The meeting wouldn’t start for another five hours. Cassidy’s husband had asked for a divorce that morning. Kevin took them RV shopping to stay busy.
While looking at RVs for Nicky, Kevin was getting recognized by fans who talked about the last scene of the pilot. Kevin had calmed down the crying baby, and the show had used it to make it a sweet moment. Kevin told Cassidy he’d gotten divorced and understood that she was going through a tough time. He bought an RV for himself and parked it next to Nicky’s trailer. Earlier, Nicky had explained he’d purchased the trailer for a girl he loved before he was drafted. He had dreamed of traveling with her but gave up on her too easily.
Dead Possum
Beth’s mother, Carol, arrived at the grand opening of the dance school. Unfortunately, when the family walked in, there was a foul stench from a dead possum. The exterminator advised that they would need to just let the animal decompose. The smell would go away in a week. Randall helped set everything up outside, and the grand opening was able to go on.
Randall and Beth wanted to meet Malik before letting Deja go to the movies with him. Malik showed up at Beth’s dance school to meet Randall. He had assumed Deja told Randall that he had a daughter, but it was news to Randall.
Parent Day
Rebecca was going to Randall’s college, while Kate stayed home. She gave Kate money to buy new CDs. Kate talked to the boy that worked at the record store, and he offered her a job.
At the college, Rebecca introduced herself to Beth and her mother. After Randall and Beth left for class, Rebecca stayed with Carol. She told Carol about the tough time her family was going through, and Carol told her about her husband’s death. Later, Carol told Beth that she didn’t think Randall was good for her since he wasn’t strong enough for her. Beth visited Randall and kissed him.
