In the previous episode of Netflix’s Unbelievable, Karen learned of a similar rape case under another precinct that Grace Rasmussen was handling. In Unbelievable Season 1 Episode 3, Karen and Grace realized that they may have a serial rapist with insider knowledge.
Clean
Unfortunately, Amber’s assailant left a clean crime scene. When Karen sat with Amber and her boyfriend, Eric, she had to tell them that she had no suspects or leads. Eric said that he’d heard that, statistically, she had five days to find the rapist and she should be doing everything she could to find him. When Morris hadn’t followed up with the lab for DNA results, she chewed him out for his lack of urgency. When they finally came in, they had found eight foreign cells. They couldn’t get a positive ID but could narrow down the suspect pool significantly. Karen also found security footage of a suspicious truck. However, they couldn’t get a clean image of the license plate.
Serial Rapist
Karen went with Grace to visit the victim of her case. She was missing a pink Cybershot camera – the same kind of camera that the rapist had used to take pictures of Amber. Grace checked every pawn shop for the camera, something Karen had already done. The lack of DNA evidence found on both of their crime scenes led Karen to conclude that the rapist could be a cop, and Grace agreed. Further, she questioned if the rapist understood that precincts don’t share information. He could purposefully choose to attack one person in each district, so the police wouldn’t know they were trying to find the same person. Karen had known about Grace’s case only by chance.
Grace proposed merging their investigations. Karen brought her a list of rape cases in the area. They each called all the police contacts on the list to find a similar. They found one in Aurora.
Identity Revealed
Someone had leaked Marie’s identity to the press. Judith rushed to her job to tell her but upset Marie on the drive home. She received hundreds of messages shaming her for lying. Fortunately, Connor sensed the tough time that she was going through and visited her. He took her to a beach, and they talked. Connor told Marie that he believed her and never said that he didn’t. In the car when he dropped her off, Marie asked if he wished that they were still dating. He’d broken up with her for religious reasons. Marie said that she would go with him to church.
When Marie went to check in with Ty, he gave her a letter that came for her. It was a criminal citation; she was being charged for false reporting. Marie worried that she would be getting kicked out since she couldn’t have any criminal charges.
