In the previous episode of Netflix’s Mindhunter, Holden and Bill were called back to Atlanta as the FBI opened an official investigation into the child murders, and Bateson ended his interview with Dr. Carr early. In Mindhunter Season 2 Episode 7, Holden came up with a plan to hopefully draw the killer out, while Bill split time between home and Atlanta.
Escalation
Yarborough was a dead end. He had only confessed to masturbating in the woods because of his pregnant wife. Another murdered boy was found while he was in custody, so they eliminated him as a suspect.
Barney went to see Patrick’s mother. She told him how her son knew many of the other dead and missing boys. No one had come to ask her about her son until him.
When an explosion in an apartment building near a daycare killed and hurt more children, the public believed it was connected. They blamed the Klan and demanded an investigation from the mayor. GBI was to take the lead, and Bill offered to be the liaison.
Crosses
Holden approached Camille Bell for cooperation with his plan. She organized a Mothers’ March through the city for the victims and their families. Holden asked if they could stop at some of the sites where the FBI would put up crosses. Having a memorial at these places could draw the killer out, and they could surveil the area to see if he returned. The event was supposed to help the families grieve, so Camille was reluctant but ultimately agreed.
Unfortunately, Holden struggled to be taken seriously. There was a hang-up with who would provide the crosses, and Holden had to ask Ted to pull some strings. When the crosses arrived at the last minute, they still needed to assemble them. Holden rushed to have them up during the march, but only made it at the very end, with Camille clearly disappointed. While Holden and Bill were drinking away their disappointment, news came out that Lubie’s body had finally been found.
Surprise Visit
As Bill was about to leave for his trip, Ms. Leland arrived at the home for a surprise visit. She asked Bill about his job and if he brought his work home with him. Bill said he never did.
The mother of the dead toddler visited Nancy. She told Nancy that she forgave Brian and her. She wanted to tell Brian, but Nancy wouldn’t allow it.
Roommates
Ted wondered why she had decided to interview Bateson herself. He wanted her to stay in the office to work on analysis. Interviews should be left to the field agents. Wendy preferred being in the field and resented being stuck in the basement.
With Kay over, Wendy expressed her disappointment. She didn’t know how to ask for the things she wanted. Wendy asked Kay to move in since she had a spare bedroom. Kay was upset that it seemed like she was asking to be roommates out of convenience and not because she wanted her to move in for relationship reasons.
