In the previous episode of Netflix’s Mindhunter, Holden and Bill interviewed Charles Manson, and the Tenches met Brian’s social worker and psychiatrist. In Mindhunter Season 2 Episode 6, Wendy and Gregg interviewed convicted murderer, Paul Bateson, while Holden returned to Atlanta and Bill attended a retreat symposium.
Paul Bateson
At Rikers Island, Wendy and Paul interviewed Paul Bateson. He’d admitted to killing Addison Verrill. Because of his association with the leather community, Gregg was convinced he was the Bag Murderer – someone who threw trash bags of dismembered victims into the Hudson. The conversation centered around equating all emotions to violence. Bateson talked freely until she got to her most important questions.
More Retreat Than Symposium
At the Director’s Retreat, Ted wanted Bill to speak with Director Webster. Bill’s description of his interactions with Ed Kemper fascinated Webster. Everyone gathered as Bill described their methods and how it felt to sit across from the Coed Killer.
Asking the Right People
Holden arrived in Atlanta to help with a development in the child murders. The FBI had opened an official investigation. Holden made sure to tell Tanya. She explained that children like the victims often had unsavory jobs, including possibly prostitution. As he asked Barney to look into it, Bill arrived.
Bill and Barney went to ask about one of the boys in the neighborhood where he was last scene. They discovered that some of the victims knew each other and hung in the same crowd. While interviewing one of their friends, Bill and Barney were called away.
Holden had asked the local authorities to search old crime scenes, as killers liked to revisit them. They found three bodies in the woods and a bag of pornography. The fingerprints on the magazines got a hit on Pickett Yarborough, a white man who didn’t fit Holden’s profile. Bill convinced DA Slaton to grant warrants to search his house and truck. Holden wasn’t convinced he was the right person, but they brought Yarborough in for questioning. To interrogate him, Holden wanted to make him wait. However, the press found out, and they risked being publicly wrong.
Regression
Nancy pointed out that Brian had regressed. He was wetting the bed frequently and sucked his thumb. After losing track of him, Nancy found him at the park, watching a girl on the swings. The girl’s mother noticed Brian and quickly took him away. At Brian’s session with the psychiatrist, they weren’t making much progress. Nancy wanted Bill to take time off work to help her at home, but with the retreat and new developments in Atlanta, he couldn’t.
