In the previous episode of HBO’s Euphoria, Rue’s manic-depressive moods led her to hold her urine involuntarily, and Jules had a tryst with Anna in LA. In the season finale of Euphoria, Rue and her friends attend the East Highland winter formal.
The Letter
Rue was in the hospital with a kidney infection. The nurse offered her Vicodin, but when Rue turned it down to manipulate the nurse into giving her a Roxicet, the doctor intervened. During her three days in Jules visited her and told her everything that happened with Nate.
During a flashback to a NA meeting where Leslie and Gia attended, Leslie read a letter. She was asked to write about what Rue’s addiction had cost their family. Instead, Leslie wrote about Rue as a baby and how she imagined a narrator telling her what Rue would be going through. She asserted Rue’s capability of overcoming her struggles with addiction.
The Clinic
Cassie went to the clinic with her mother and Lexi but asked them to wait in the waiting room. After answering the nurse’s questions, including if she was having second thoughts, Cassie went in for the procedure. The doctor told her she could listen to music, and the nurse gave her a pill for the discomfort. Cassie imagined herself ice skating.
The Quarterback
We saw Nate during a football game. He ended up running the ball to the endzone for the win after he lost control of the team. Cal reminded him that he needed to be a leader. Nate confronted Cal and got in his face. He struggled against Cal, who ultimately pinned him to the floor. Nate banged himself against the floor and screamed. Cal retreated to his office.
Nate had trouble getting an erection with Maddy. She brought up the photos on his phone and told him it was okay that he wasn’t 100% straight. He was rough with Maddy and threatened her again. When Nate was in the bathroom, Maddy found the DVD that showed Cal with Jules.
Winter Formal
Rue, Jules, Kat, Cassie, Lexi, and Maddy hung out together at the winter formal. Nate brought another girl, and Cassie was no longer with McKay. Kat found Ethan and explained why she was trying to hurt him. She apologized and confessed that she liked him, and he kissed her. They left the dance early.
In the restroom, Rue found Jules, who had been texting Anna. They danced and flipped off Nate from across the dance floor. Outside, Rue told him to stay away from Fezco. She accused him of being responsible for the raid. Fezco had to break into a wealthy man’s house for money to pay Mouse. He beat the man with a gun in front of his young son. Eventually, Maddy made Nate jealous enough to ditch his date. She told him that they weren’t good for each other as they danced.
Jules wanted Rue to go with her to LA. They made it all the way to the train, but Rue backed out. She thought about all that her family had been through. Rue went home and snorted some coke. A dance sequence to Labyrinth and Zendaya’s “All for Us” ended the episode.
