In the previous episode of Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale, the Waterfords forced June into a video of them pleading to the Canadian government for Nichole’s return. In The Handmaid’s Tale Season 3 Episode 6, June traveled with them to Washington, D.C.
Silence
Lawrence allowed the Waterfords to take June with them to Washington, D.C. Rita came with them, and they stayed with the Winslows. They had five children, which reflected Commander Winslow’s high rank. Rita had remarked the most she had seen together were three.
Fred and the other Commanders saw the situation with Nichole to be politically advantageous. They continued to make videos of Handmaids praying with them, silently. The Handmaids in D.C. wore collars around their mouths, and Winslow’s Handmaid revealed her mouth to be stapled shut.
When Aunt Lydia presented June with a collar for her to wear during the latest prayer video, she asked Lydia if she wanted them all silenced. Aunt Lydia looked at her with compassion and said no.
Crusader
The Swiss stepped in to be a neutral party between Gildead and Canada in the battle for Nichole. After they interviewed the Waterfords, the Swiss representatives asked to interview June alone. Without anyone else in the room, June made her wishes clear. She wanted Nichole to remain in Canada. June told them that Fred was not the child’s father. The Swiss already knew that it was Nick since they’d heard the cassette she made for Luke.
June made a deal with them. She would get Nick to provide them information, and they would help Nichole to remain in Canada. June found a private moment with Nick, who was in town before going to the Front. He reluctantly agreed to talk to them. Unfortunately, the Swiss continued their talks with Gilead. The deal had fallen through with Nick. They couldn’t trust him. Serena revealed to June that Nick had been a soldier in the Crusades. He had helped Gilead take down the American government.
Not Love
When June finally got a chance to confront her, Serena insisted that everything changed when she saw Nichole again. June disagreed. Things only changed for Serena, but Gilead was still the same. June told Serena that what she felt wasn’t love. If Serena were truly acting out of love, she would save Nichole from Gilead. Serena pointed out the Winslow children, who seemed happy.
