In the previous episode of Netflix’s Designated Survivor, Aaron officially joined Kirkman as his running mate, and Seth met his biological daughter. In Designated Survivor Season 3 Episode 4, Aaron and Isabel clashed over his reluctance to talk about his heritage during the campaign, and Hannah and Dr. Mays visited a flu-infected apartment building.
Rivera
The press was suddenly interested in Isabel as Aaron’s girlfriend and rumored fiancée. Lorraine encouraged the false rumors. She talked to Isabel about her mother’s past as part of the Young Lords. Though Isabel’s mother worked to help kids while with them, Lorraine pointed out that the violence would be all anyone would talk about. Isabel held an event showcasing jackets for the homeless that could become sleeping bags. Aaron showed up so that the press would be interested.
Isabel called Aaron out about when he had changed his last name from Rivera to Shore. Aaron had said his parents changed it when he was a child, but he had done it in high school. He went to a prep school where he faced some ignorance from his classmates. However, Isabel didn’t buy it as she’d faced similar prejudices.
Dark Money
A bill passed to allow for organizations to conceal their spending, but Pres. Kirkman was ready to veto it. Still, he and Lorraine attended a fundraiser where he met with those trying to change his mind. At the same time, teachers were striking. Moss had villainized them to the point where a protest became violent. To get teachers back to work, Kirkman took the dark money. He would still veto it, but Harper ensured that there were enough votes to override it.
Negative
Emily was reluctant to open up her test results for the cancer gene. On edge about it, she confronted Kirkman for taking dark money. When she finally opened it, they were negative. Emily called her mother to tell her the good news, but she wouldn’t let on to Emily how far her condition had advanced.
Harper’s wife was home from rehab. She wanted to reconcile with him. Harper ignored a call from their therapist, the woman he was seeing. Harper was also jealous of Aaron and where he was in his political career. He wanted to stay on if Kirkman won.
Meanwhile, Seth was desperately trying to make up for the lost time with his daughter. He obsessed over getting her presents, but she seemed uncomfortable about it.
Eugenics
Hannah and Dr. Mays visited an apartment where the tenants were sick. However, while going door to door, they noticed that only people with darker skin were getting sick. The virus was engineered to target those who produced more melanin. They realized that this explained why red birds were dying in Florida. After speaking with Dianne, they believed the virus was created by a believer in eugenics.
