Agents of SHIELD Season 6 Episode 5 sees May a prisoner of Sarge and Snowflake. After being sedated, May struggles to clear her head of her time with Coulson during his final days. She comes around as Sarge sends Snowflake out on a simple kidnap mission. When May asks Sarge what he wants from her, his answer is simple — he’s going to flip her to his side.
Hard Decisions
When Yo-Yo continues to throw herself into her work and to avoid him, Mack follows up with her to make sure that she’s dealing with Keller’s death. She says that she had to make the decision to put him down. She’s getting to accustomed to both making hard decisions and to losing the people close to her. Mack tells her that he had to distance himself from her because he had to be completely focused on the job in order to try and live up to Coulson. Now, a man who looks just like Coulson is here and agents are dying. He used to have Yo-Yo to turn to for support. She tells Mack that he can’t push her away then turn to her when he needs support.
Yo-Yo tells Mack she’s concerned that Benson is not up to the task after they lost Keller. When confronted with Yo-Yo’s concerns, Benson says that he’s never seen or dealt with anything like this before. He wants to take a night off. Mack’s concerned that Benson is going to start drinking again to cope. Benson says his being drunk or not won’t change what they’re dealing with nor will it bring Keller back.
Benson finds Yo-Yo in the lab at Keller’s side. Benson accuses her of spying on him. Yo-Yo defends herself by saying that her actions saved Benson. Benson says she likely saved them all. It was a hard decision. He shares the hardest decision he’s ever had to make — taking his husband off of life support after a car crash left him brain dead. He tells Yo-Yo that she was right to use the knife to kill the creature, but all the knife did was paralyze it. It took 6 hours for the creature to finally die. When it did, it crystalized, much like the crystals coming out of Keller. Yo-Yo realizes that the crystal structure is the same as the monoliths that SHIELD has encountered before. Energized, Benson requests to take a group to examine the monoliths.
One Person’s Dream
Snowflake returns with the man she kidnapped. Sarge tells May that she’s going to kill him with one of the knives. May tells Sarge he’s crazy. Snowflake shoots the man point-blank in the head, then she and Sarge leave May with the body. As May frees herself from the handcuffs, the body reanimates and begins attacking her. May fights the guy until he starts to crystallize. She grabs the knife and stabs him as Sarge directed, stopping the process.
Sarge explains that the creatures are the Shrike. They travel from world to world, infesting people then destroying the planet. He has tracked them across countless worlds for over 100 years. This is the closest he has gotten to confronting their creator, and when he does he’s going to burn everything to make sure they don’t spread any further.
As Sarge drives on, May lures Snowflake in close and incapacitates her. May struggles with Sarge, forcing him to stop the truck. The two grapple, with May getting the upper hand and knocking Sarge out. Though she handcuffs him, she shows him the same gentleness that she once showed Coulson.
Proper Motivation
Daisy, Simmons, and the crew are surrounded by Confederacy ships. Ad they are being boarded, Enoch says that these ships are behaving differently from the one that attacked he and Fitz. If the fleet wanted them dead, it would have cut through them already. Enoch opens the door, allowing a single member of the boarding party aboard.
Atarah is a ruthless Chromicon and Enoch’s former superior. She explains that their world was destroyed and all that’s left of their race is aboard the Confederate ships that they commandeered. She knows that the SHIELD agents have traveled in time and wants them to show her how so that she can lead the Chromicons back in time to save their planet. She uses Fitz as motivation to try and persuade Daisy and Simmons into sharing the secrets of time travel.
Daisy and Simmons explain that they don’t know how they traveled in time, but if anyone could figure it out it would be Fitz. Atarah turns to Enoch for intel on how to motivate Fitz into helping them. Enoch says that putting Simmons in danger is the most efficient way to motivate Simmons. Simmons agrees to be held captive by the Chromicons in exchange for Daisy and the rest of the crew being released. When Fitz learns how Enoch put Simmons in danger, he is furious.
At the Lighthouse, Daisy and the crew return without Fitz and Simmons as May radios in that she has captured Sarge and is on her way back.
