Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale is back for its third season. Last season ended with June giving Nichole to Emily instead of escaping with them. In The Handmaid’s Tale Season 3 Episode 1, June tried to go back for Hannah.
“What’s She Like?”
June ran off after the car carrying Emily and Nichole drove away, and Commander Lawrence found her. He thought they might be able to catch up with them before the border. June convinced him to take her to the Mackenzies, where Hannah lived. She made it to Hannah’s room, but the Guardians were already surrounding the house. June let Hannah sleep and surrendered to them.
Mrs. Mackenzie kindly told her that she needed to stop. June asked her about Hannah’s life, but when Mrs. Mackenzie remarked about her eyes resembling Hannah’s, June reminded her that she was Hannah’s mother. The Guardians took June back to the Waterfords. June held Serena as she cried about Nichole’s safety. When Nick took her back to her room, he reminded June about what it took to help her escape. She would never have the same opportunity again.
Asylum
Emily ran with the baby through the woods as drones hovered above her. She crossed the river with Nichole in her arms. The current swept them under briefly until she made it to the other side. As Nichole cried, signaling she was still alive, Canadian border police asked her if she would like to seek asylum. They took Emily and Nichole to a hospital, where everyone applauded them.
Luke and Moira were summoned to another refugee intake office. They picked up an envelope that contained the photo of Hannah. Emily arrived with Nichole and told them that June had saved her life.
Burn It Down
Serena used rubbing alcohol to clean her wound. On an impulse, she set fire to her bedroom with it. As the flames spread throughout the house, June, Rita, and Serena waited outside. Nick said goodbye to her, and June was taken away back to headquarters. While the Mackenzies had forgiven her for breaking in, she still had to suffer the consequences.
While June cleaned the entrance hall, another Handmaid whispered to her that Emily and the baby had gotten out and were safe. Aunt Louise told June she had a new posting. June arrived at Commander Lawrence’s house.
