In the previous episode of Netflix’s The OA, Prairie arrived at Treasure Island, a private psychiatric hospital that Hap ran. In The OA season 2 episode 2, Prairie reunited with Scott, Rachel, and Renata, and Karim’s search led him to Dr. Marlowe Rhodes.
Bound Together
Hap caught Prairie up with how he ended up in this universe. This universe’s Dr. Percy was a psychiatrist who never became interested in NDEs. After Hap left Prairie on the side of the road, he took the others to a field and injected them with something that would kill them in minutes to force them into performing the movements. They awoke together in a circle of chairs except for Homer, who was still Dr. Roberts.
Hap wanted to know how Prairie was able to arrive in the same universe as them. He charged Dr. Roberts with extracting that information from her. After an emotional session with Prairie, Dr. Roberts allowed her time in the rec room with the others. Scott and Rachel hugged Prairie, but Hap had convinced Renata she was delusional. Unfortunately, Rachel had aphasia, which made her a good candidate for Hap’s assistant. Through board game pieces, she communicated to the rest of them that Hap was creating an interdimensional map.
Seed
Hap took Rachel with him to receive the body of the brain-dead Q kid who jumped from the house. He extracted a sprouted seed from his ear. While cleaning up after the procedure, Rachel entered a door she wasn’t allowed into. She saw something that upset her and stabbed Hap with a scalpel. After a struggle, Rachel ended up dead on the floor. Through her eyes, we see the previous universe, where we learn that Buck’s birth name was Michelle.
Dream Study
Karim followed Carmen and Ingrid from CURI to a bar and asked them about Michelle. They’d both signed NDAs, but Carmen was willing to talk. She told Karim that they dreamed 4-5 times a night and were woken up after each REM cycle to talk about their dream. The woman who listened to their dreams, Dr. Marlowe Rhodes, quit two weeks ago. Karim enlisted his friend, Mo, to track down Dr. Rhodes.
Mo explained that Rhodes was former MI-5, but after quitting, she was completely off the grid. However, Mo gave him the name of a bookstore she frequented, which he used to track her down.
The House
Dr. Rhodes was living in a cabin. She flew drones while Karim asked her about CURI. They were studying a phenomenon first observed in Germany in the 1920s where a group of people collectively dreamed about Nazis. With the large sample of dreams they were collecting, a pattern of the same three images emerged. They were all features of the house where Michelle stayed. Mo told Karim that Nina Azarova owned the house, and she was just committed.
