In the previous episode of Starz’s Outlander, a pregnant Brianna found Claire and Jamie after her sexual assault, and Jamie beat Roger after mistaking him for Brianna’s rapist. In Outlander season 4 episode 10, Brianna’s assault continued to haunt her, and a group of Native Americans held Roger captive.
Courage Not to Fight
Brianna asked about Jamie’s injured hand, and he lied. Jamie invited her to check the snares with him, and he revealed that Claire told him about the rape. Brianna spoke about how she felt she should have fought harder, and Jamie showed her that it took courage for her not to fight. Brianna asked him about his own sexual assault and whether killing Jack Randall gave him any closure.
Back at the cabin, Claire offered to perform a surgical abortion on Brianna if she so chose. However, if Brianna opted to keep the baby, she would have to go back through the stones since they didn’t know if she could time travel with a baby in her arms. No matter the decision though, she would have to make it soon.
Nothing But a Savage
Brianna had a nightmare that Lizzie woke her from. To comfort her, Lizzie promised that her attacker wouldn’t hurt her again, and Brianna realized she knew something. Lizzie explained, but Brianna questioned how she would know what he looked like. Brianna realized she had made a mistake and confronted Jamie and Ian. Ian explained that he had sold Roger to the Mohawk, who had traveled to trade with the Cherokee. Brianna insisted that everyone would travel to bring him back, but the Mohawk lived in upstate New York, over 700 miles away.
Because Brianna was pregnant, Murtagh would take her to Jocasta’s while Jamie and Ian tracked Roger down. Brianna insisted that Claire go with Jamie and Ian so that Roger would see a familiar face. Unfortunately, it meant that Claire wouldn’t be there for the birth of the baby, since Brianna decided to keep it.
Murtagh and Brianna arrived at Jocasta’s. She remembered Murtagh and welcomed Brianna, despite being pregnant and unmarried. But Jamie had given Murtagh another task: to find Stephen Bonnet and bring him back to him in secret.
Marking the Days
With the Mohawk, Roger walked while tied to a horse all day with another captive person. He marked the days by tying knots, remembered landmarks he passed, and took note that they were heading north. He resolved to survive, escape, and return to Brianna. When the other man died, they picked up the pace north. One day, he fell down a drop-off, and when the Mohawk tried to pull him back up, he came loose from his rope. He ran, and they chased after him. Roger finally lost them and stumbled upon a stone circle, just like at Craigh na Dun. He remembered the gems he had gotten from Stephen Bonnet and cried. In the final moments of the episode, he reached out toward the stones.
