In the previous episode of NBC’s This Is Us, Jack struggled with Nick, and Tess told Kate that she likes girls. In the mid-season finale of This Is Us, Jack’s time with Nick was almost up, and Randall had his first debate with Councilman Brown.
Take a Chance
Things weren’t going well for Randall during his debate. Whenever Randall attacked Brown’s lack of action, he spun it into doing what he could for the community. But Randall won the crowd over by reminding them of citizens’ unanswered complaints. Despite the win, Jae-won revealed the latest poll had Randall too far behind to catch up to Brown before the election.
At home, Beth and Randall had their hands full with the girls. Deja wanted to visit her mother in Delaware, and they agreed to take her. After some advice from Rebecca, Tess told her parents she might like girls. Beth suggested that the poll results were a blessing in disguise since a lot was going on with the family. Randall disagreed; he wanted to stay in the race and see it through. Beth reminded him that he promised he would quit if she wanted him to, but he stood firm.
Terrified
Kate and Toby met with her doctor. They agreed they wanted the baby’s biological sex to be a surprise. Her doctor also told her she didn’t think all the time in the car driving to her Adele-o-gram gigs would be good for her. Kate tried to get a job as a chorus teacher at a high school, but since she didn’t complete her college degree, they couldn’t hire her. Kate and Toby admitted they were too scared to know the sex of the baby. Toby took Kate to a community college and got a gender reveal cake. The baby was a boy.
Get Home
Jack spoke to Major Dawson on the phone and asked him for a few more days. Dawson wouldn’t budge; he would only have two weeks. Jack and Nick fought, and Nick punched him. Afterwards, Nick let Jack take him to his favorite place by the water where the ville looked small and far away. Jack reminded him that their mission was to get home. Later, Jack found Nick in a drugged state. However, he lost track of him, and an explosion in a boat had Jack jumping into the water.
Two Fathers
Kevin and Zoe would be heading to the fishing ville with a guide. They would be talking with a man who had been a boy who lived in village during the war. He explained that his father was VC and would sneak into the village to see his mother. However, he didn’t recognize Jack or the woman in the picture. Kevin was disappointed. The man explained that while their fathers fought on opposite sides, they were similar in that they hid their time in the war for the sake of their children. Even though they were enemies, their sons could talk and share a meal.
As they were leaving, their guide dropped a bombshell. He had researched the family, and no one in Kevin’s family died in the war. We see a silhouette of a man in a shabby house, and the name Nicholas Pearson on letters on the coffee table. A flash-forward revealed that it was Rebecca at the hospital.
