In the previous episode of NBC’s This Is Us, Nick’s commanding officer dropped him off with Jack at the fishing ville. In This Is Us season 3 episode 8, Jack struggled to set Nick straight, while the Pearsons celebrated Thanksgiving in the present.
Not Just Women and Children
In Vietnam, Jack’s CO got him and his men a turkey, but Nick wouldn’t join. The woman with the necklace struggled to carry some water, so Jack tried to help her. Her father refused his help. She also had a son who cut his foot earlier in the week on the barbed wire. Jack took them some turkey and looked at her son’s infected wound. He ordered Nick, a medic, to treat him, but he refused. Nick told him a story of how his first CO had died because a seemingly harmless woman tipped off her VC brother. Later, the woman gave Jack her necklace.
Worthy of the Truth
William and Jesse met at their sobriety meeting. William was playing the piano when Jesse approached him. Later, William ran into Jesse as he left a liquor store. They went to get something to eat, and Jesse told him a false story about himself and his cocaine addiction. William saw through it and asked him for the real story. He then invited Jesse to a Thanksgiving gathering. Jesse arrived with a woman, and William seemed bothered. Jesse told him the woman was his cousin.
The Fireman
We catch a glimpse of the last Thanksgiving with Jack. They invited Miguel, who had just gotten divorced. Jack encouraged him to make an effort with keeping in touch with his kids even though it seemed his ex-wife was turning them against him. Meanwhile, Randall was writing his college admission essay. The prompt was to talk about the one person who had the greatest impact on his life, and everyone in the family thought it should be the fireman who brought him to the hospital.
In the present, Miguel and Rebecca were going to Thanksgiving dinner at Miguel’s daughter’s place. It was awkward, and his son was rude to Rebecca. Miguel stuck up for her and told them that he had tried to be part of their lives.
Perfect
Randall and Beth were leaving dinner up to Kate and Toby. They were volunteering at a soup kitchen. Jae-won wanted to use it as a photo op, but Beth disagreed. Jae-won and Beth clashed, and Randall immediately took her side. Beth realized Randall said yes to her ideas because she needed a win, not necessarily because he liked them.
Toby was worried about living up to dinner expectations, but Kate encouraged him. They would also be looking after Tess, who had stayed home because she wasn’t feeling well. Toby and Kate realized Tess had her first period, so Kate went to check on her. She shared an embarrassing story about her first period and encouraged Tess to talk with her. Tess hinted that she might be into girls and asked Kate not to tell her parents. When Kate came downstairs, Toby had messed up dinner and quickly bought a feast. Kate was impressed and felt that it was something Jack would have done.
