In the previous episode of The Good Place, Michael showed Eleanor how she and Chidi had fallen in love in the afterlife. Michael and Eleanor also argued about free will and set out to better the lives of all human beings. Also, Shaun and the other Bad Place demons managed to build a working portal to Earth. Meeting Douglas
Michael and Janet took the group to meet with Doug Forcett, a man who lived completely off the grid and grosing his own foods. Doug, as it turned out, was the man who had gotten the closest to guessing how the afterlife worked (we learned of his existence back in the series premiere). Michael and Janet posed as a reporter and photographer team who were writing a human interest story about Doug. Michael believed that Doug was the blueprint to getting all of humanity to lead better lives.
Gaming The System
Chidi, Eleanor, Tahani, and Jason were waiting at a nearby bar. Chidi and Jason decided to go play pool, after Jason expressed his distaste for Eleanor’s speaking voice. Jason taught Chidi how to play pool, Jacksonville style. Eleanor went to Tahani and asked her about how to bring up her love affair with Chidi. Tahani told Eleanor not to tell Chidi, unless she wanted to fall in love with Chidi again. Back with Doug, Michael was being told some of the ways that Douglas had come up with to exploit the point system. Doug realized that making people happy earned him points so he had begun doing anything anyone asked as long as it made them happy. Janet explained how Doug was exploiting the system, Doug quickly began to fall apart and made many mistakes which caused him to lose many points.
Barfight
Back at the bar, Eleanor quickly recognized some of the demons that had infiltrated Earth. She attempted to get the group to leave the bar, but Shaun managed to stop them from leaving. Shaun confronted them about Michael’s location. Meanwhile, Doug held a funeral for his recently deceased snail. Michael decided to convince Doug to abandon his life of perfect goodness, but Doug refused to do so. He was afraid of accidentally losing enough points to end up in the Bad Place. At that moment Michael realized one of the fatal flaws of the point system. Michael and Janet returned to the bar to find everyone being held captive. Janet immediately utilized her martial arts skills to fight off the demons and send them back to the Bad Place. During the fight, Eleanor confessed her feelings to Chidi. More demons arrived at the bar and Janet decided to take everyone inside of The Void that she resides in.
