After a 14-year legal battle with the US government, Julian Assange is finally free and returning to Australia. Reports indicated that the WikiLeaks founder took a plea deal and pleaded guilty to violating US espionage law. The plea deal stated that Assange wouldn’t spend time in US custody and would be allowed to return to Australia as a free man. The release of the activist has prompted people to know more about his personal life, especially his wife, Stella Assange.

Julian Assange met Stella in 2011 when she joined his legal team. Per National News, she changed her name from Sara Gonzalez Devant to Stella Morris to protect her loved ones. Meanwhile, the South China Morning Post reported that the couple began their relationship in 2015. The couple exchanged rings in 2017 and welcomed their first son that year. Two years later, Stella Assange gave birth to their second son. The news of their relationship started surfacing in public when Stella tried to secure bail for Julian in 2020.

According to People Magazine, Julian Assange and Stella Assange tied the knot in March 2022 at Belmarsh Prison. The outlet noted that the lawyer wore a lilac satin wedding dress designed by Vivienne Westwood. Additionally, authorities allowed only four guests and two witnesses to attend the ceremony. Since then, Stella Assange has raised awareness about her husband and why he should be free.

After the marriage ceremony in March 2022, Stella Assange talked to Reuters, noticing that she would have been happier if Julian had been outside. She said, “I am very happy and very sad. I love Julian with all my heart, and I wish he were here.” Additionally, the publication stated that Westwood embroidered the wedding dress with words such as “relentless,” “valiant,” and “free enduring love.”

Over the years, Julian Assange’s wife, Stella Assange, has advocated for his freedom. On June 25, Stella publicly announced that a UK court granted bail to Assange and was heading to the airport to board the plane to the US. She captioned the video, “Julian is free!!!! Words cannot express our immense gratitude to YOU- yes YOU, who have all mobilized for years and years to make this come true.”

As of this writing, Julian Assange has reached his native country Australia.
