Pamela Smart’s infamous case is back in the spotlight. The former high school employee has taken responsibility for her crime in a new video statement. Pamela was convicted of being an accomplice in the 1990 murder of Gregory Smart. She had an affair with a teen student, William “Billy” Flynn, who later shot dead Pamela’s 24-year-old husband in New Hampshire.

According to CBS News, Pamela, who was 22 then, plotted with Flynn and his three friends to kill Gregory Smart. During the 1991 trial, Flynn testified that Pamela had threatened to break up with him if he didn’t kill Gregory. However, Pamela insisted she wasn’t involved in her husband’s murder but admitted that she seduced Flynn. Later, Pamela was given life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. Meanwhile, Flynn pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to 28 years in prison.

Years later, Flynn married Kelly in 2006 from behind bars, reported Daily Mail. During his time in prison, Flynn also earned his GED and electrician’s helper license. Per the outlet, William Flynn was set to reunite with his wife, who lived in Newcastle, Maine, following his release. CBS News reported that Flynn was granted parole on his 41st birthday.

CBS News reported that William “Billy” Flynn was released in 2015 after serving almost 25 years in prison. He also shared with the board that killing will continue to haunt him. Flynn said, “I will always feel terrible about what happened 25 years ago…Parole will not change that.”

In the latest update, Pamela Smart, 56, has admitted her involvement in the murder of Gregory Smart. Per AP News, she said, “I am the one to blame for his absence from this world.”

The infamous case inspired Joyce Maynard’s book To Die For. In 1995, it was adapted into a film starring Nicole Kidman and Joaquin Phoenix. The case has also been depicted in several documentaries over the years.
