According to ABC News, two separate juries convicted Shayna Hubers of murdering her ex-boyfriend, Ryan Poston, in 2012. Both her convictions came three years apart, the first in 2015 and the second following a re-trial in 2018. Hubers is currently serving a life sentence in the Kentucky Correctional Institution for Women, per prison records.
CBS News stated that Hubers and Poston were in an on-again-off-again relationship when she fatally shot him in October 2012. Hubers then called 911 and claimed that she “killed [her] boyfriend in self-defense” after he threw her across the room and into the bookshelf. ABC further stated that Hubers claimed Poston was abusive.
However, at the crime scene, police found no signs of violence, per CBS. They believed that the duo had an argument when Hubers shot Poston six times. The victim’s friends said that he was going to end their on-again-off-again relationship and had a date with Miss Ohio USA, Audrey Bolte, on the night of the murder. Prosecutors suggested that Hubers committed the crime after Poston tried to break up with her.

What was Shayna Hubers convicted of?
In 2015, a jury convicted Shayna Hubers of first-degree murder for shooting her on-again-off-again boyfriend, Ryan Poston, six times. The incident occurred in Poston’s condo in Highland Heights, Kentucky, on October 12, 2012, reported E! News. Hubers claimed that the victim, her boyfriend, was abusive and that she shot him in self-defense.
CBS News reported that Hubers was the first to make the 911 call 10 to 15 minutes after she shot Poston. In the call, she said she “killed [her] boyfriend in self-defense.” She alleged that Poston, a 29-year-old lawyer, threw her across the room and into the bookshelf. However, police found no signs of violence at the scene.
The outlet reported that during her police interview, Hubers displayed bizarre behavior. She spoke to the authorities for almost three hours, danced, twirled, and sang “Amazing Grace.” Eventually, they charged her with the murder just hours after she committed the crime. After her first conviction, Shayna Hubers received a 40-year prison sentence, per ABC. However, her conviction was soon overturned after it was revealed that a jury member had a prior felony conviction. Hubers received a re-trial, which took place in August 2018, when a jury once again convicted her of murder.
Cincinnati.com stated that prosecutors said Hubers killed her ex-boyfriend because he was leaving her. CBS News further reported that friends claimed Poston was going to break up with her and also had a date on the night of the murder. Meanwhile, the jury did not believe Hubers’ self-defense claim.
Another report confirmed that in October 2018, following her second murder conviction, Hubers received a life sentence with parole after 20 years. The outlet stated that she would become eligible for parole after 14 years from that day onwards, as she had already served six years in prison.

According to Cincinnati.com, in June 2018, Shayna Hubers married in Campbell County’s jail while awaiting re-trial. Hubers and a transgender woman named Unique Taylor, previously known as Richard McBee, tied the knot. McBee had previously told the courts from jail that she was transgender and requested to be referred to as Unique Taylor.
The outlet reported that at the time, 41-year-old Taylor was in jail awaiting trial on robbery charges and being a persistent felony offender. Records showed that Taylor was a divorcee when she was arrested. Back then, Taylor was also facing additional charges of being a fugitive from another state for probation violation. Previously, in 2003, a federal in Tennessee had indicted Taylor on charges of manufacturing, distributing, and possessing methamphetamine.
While discussing Hubers and Taylor’s marriage ceremony, Campbell County Jailer James A. Daley said, “We had them in two separate little cells where they could hear each other, and that was about it.” He claimed that the ceremony lasted for about two minutes, but the two could not touch. Daley further said the Supreme Court mandates that “it’s a fundamental right and if they want to get married while they are in prison we have to allow it.”
However, in January 2019, Law & Crime stated that Hubers filed for divorce from Taylor. Court records showed that their relationship had become “irretrievably broken.”
Shayna Hubers is now serving her sentence in the Kentucky Correctional Institution for Women.
