In 2023, the court convicted Alex Murdaugh of killing his wife and son at the family’s hunting lodge in 2021. However, his team of attorneys asked for a new trial after learning that one of the court clerks influenced the jurors. The team filed a motion and requested a new trial. However, things didn’t go their way because the court denied their request to grant a new trial for Murdaugh, giving a massive setback to the lawyer and his attorneys.
According to The New York Times, the judge made it clear that Rebecca Hill, the court clerk, made some “fleeting and foolish” comments during the trial. However, Murdaugh’s lawyers were unable to prove that her statements affected the jury’s decision. As a result, the court said that the lawyer “did not meet the bar to have his conviction and life sentence set aside.”
As per People Magazine, the judge also believed that this case doesn’t need a new trial because of comments made by “publicity-seeking clerk of court.” Meanwhile, after the court’s ruling, Hill’s lawyers expressed gratitude towards the court’s ruling and said they respected the verdict. Hill has always denied all the allegations against her. As of now, the court hasn’t charged Hill for allegedly tampering with the jury during the Alex Murdaugh trial.
