Former zookeeper, Joseph Allen Maldonado aka Joe Exotic was sentenced to 22 years in prison in January 2020. His crimes involved several animal abuse charges and even, the murder for hire for the plot to kill Carole Baskin. Carole Baskin is the founder of Big Cat Rescue.
According to AP, Joe Exotic was resentenced in January 2022. A federal judge reduced his jail term to 21 years in prison, which is one year less than his original sentence. The culprit begged for leniency, however, the judge reduced his punishment by only a year.
He tearfully told a judge,
“Please don’t make me die in prison waiting for a chance to be free.”
This means he was going to be released in 2042. However, due to resentencing, he will be released in 2041.
Is there a documentary about the life of Joe Exotic?
In 2020, Netflix premiered a true crime documentary streaming television series titled Tiger King. It had three seasons and showcased the life of former zookeeper, Joe Exotic.
According to Netflix’s official YouTube channel, the synopsis of the true-crime documentary streaming television reads,
“Among the eccentrics and cult personalities in the stranger-than-fiction world of big cat owners, few stand out more than Joe Exotic, a mulleted, gun-toting polygamist and country western singer who presides over an Oklahoma roadside zoo. Charismatic but misguided, Joe and an unbelievable cast of characters including drug kingpins, conmen, and cult leaders all share a passion for big cats, and the status and attention their dangerous menageries garner.”
It continues,
“But things take a dark turn when Carole Baskin, an animal activist and owner of a big cat sanctuary, threatens to put them out of business, stoking a rivalry that eventually leads to Joe’s arrest for a murder-for-hire plot, and reveals a twisted tale where the only thing more dangerous than a big cat is its owner.”
It was directed by Eric Goode and Rebecca Chaiklin.
