Was Lizzie Borden Found Guilty & When Did She Die?

The case of Lizzie Borden continues to be one of the USA’s most fascinating murder mysteries. On August 4, 1892, Lizzie’s parents, Andrew and Abby Borden, were murdered in their home in Fall River, Massachusetts. The killer reportedly used an axe to kill the couple. Moreover, both of their mutilated corpses were discovered with heavy blows to their head. Following the investigation, officials came to suspect the culprit to be the couple’s daughter, Lizzie Borden.

Lizzie got arrested and was put on trial in 1893. According to Britannica, the accused tried to purchase prussic acid, which is a dangerous poison, a few days before the murders. Furthermore, there was suspicion that she burnt a dress on a stove.

In the end, Lizzie was found not guilty of killing her parents due to a lack of circumstantial evidence. After her trial ended, she and her elder sister, Emma, moved out of the Borden house. They purchased a modern house in The Hill neighborhood in Fall River, Massachusetts, where they lived together till 1905.

When and how did Lizzie Borden die?

Lizzie Borden died on June 1, 1927, in Fall River at age 66. She was reportedly suffering from pneumonia. However, a few months before her death, Lizzie got her gallbladder removed. Even though only a few people attended her funeral, the details of the event were not published.

Lizzie’s elder sister, Emma, died approximately nine days later, on June 10, 1927, in Newmarket, New Hampshire. She reportedly suffered from kidney problems. Both sisters were buried beside their father in Oak Grove Cemetery. According to Legends of America, following Lizzie’s death, she left $30,000 to the Fall River Animal Rescue League. This amount right now is more than $450,000.

Furthermore, she left $500 to take care of her father’s grave and even gave $6,000 each to her closest friend and cousin. As per modern day currency rates, $500 is currently more than $7,000, while $6,000 is now more than $85,000.
