Murder in the Heartland: How Was Jessica Currin Killed?

On August 1, 2000, the charred body of 18-year-old Jessica Currin was discovered in Mayfield Middle School. Her corpse didn’t have her underwear. Furthermore, her skin and clothes were horrendously burnt. Beside her, there was a burnt belt and a clump of hair. Officials also discovered an empty plastic bottle that reeked of gasoline.

The small town of Mayfield, Kentucky, was shattered by this case. Fueled by the incompetency of law officials, it took years to find the culprit.

Jessica Currin was the daughter of Joe and Jean Currin. Joe was Mayfield’s fire chief. The 18-year-old even had a one-year-old son named Zion. Even though she became a mother at a very young age, she was very caring and attentive.

This horrific case will be covered in the upcoming episode of Murder in the Heartland that will air on Investigation Discovery (ID) on November 15, 9:00 p.m. ET. This episode is titled Mom’s Night Out.

The synopsis of Mom’s Night Out reads, “An inexperienced police department handles the tragic murder case of young mother Jessica Currin, leading to critical errors and false accusations; the case goes cold until Jessica’s father protests the state of Kentucky to reinvestigate”.

How Was Jessica Currin Killed?

According to Talk Murder With Me, the following details of Jessica Currin’s murder were given by a key witness named Victoria.

On the night of July 29, 2000, a man named Quincy Cross and a woman named Tamara Caldwell approached her for sex. However, when she rejected their advances, Cross hit her with a baseball bat, which knocked her unconscious. They took her to the house of another man, named Jeffrey Burton, and sexually assaulted her.

Soon, Quincy Cross hit the 18-year-old on her head with a wrench and strangled her to death using his black braided belt. Cross along with her posse placed Jessica’s corpse in Burton’s garage. However, when the body began to decay, it was taken to the school and set on fire.
