In recent news, officials took 10 members and associates of the Gambino crime family into custody. According to CNN, the accused have been charged with crimes like extortion, witness retaliation, and racketeering conspiracy. Furthermore, CNN reported that according to federal prosecutors, the 10 of them did this to gain control over the carting and demolition industries of New York City.
The arrested members found their names in a 16-count indictment. However, one of them appeared before a US magistrate in Brooklyn federal court. According to a spokesman for the US Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York named John Marzulli, 9 of them pled not guilty. The charges against them are part of a coordinated international operation.
In a statement, US Attorney Breon Peace said, “As alleged, for years, the defendants committed violent extortions, assaults, arson, witness retaliation, and other crimes in an attempt to dominate the New York carting and demolition industries”
The indictment further states, “The members and associates of the Gambino crime family engaged in conduct designed to prevent government detection of their identities. Their illegal activities and the location of proceeds of those activities.”
Who is the Gambino Crime Family?
The Gambino crime family is an Italian-American Mafia crime family that was founded in the early 20th century. They operate in New York and are a part of the dreaded “Five Families”.
Their illegal activities include money laundering, prostitution, racketeering, and loansharking. Furthermore, they even take part in gambling, fencing, hijacking, and fraud. During the height of their power, they had several leaders like John Gotti, Paul Castellano, Carlo Gambino, Albert Anastasia, Vincent Mangano, etc.
Even though this family is still active, their last prominent leader John Gotti was arrested in 1990. He died on June 10, 2002, due to throat cancer.
