Magnolia Pictures has debuted the first trailer and poster for the Japanese drama Shoplifters, whose international rights they acquired back in May after its debut at the Cannes Film Festival where it won the Palme d’Or award, both of which can be viewed in full in the player below.

After one of their shoplifting sessions, Osamu and his son come across a little girl in the freezing cold. At first reluctant to shelter the girl, Osamu’s wife agrees to take care of her after learning of the hardships she faces.Although the family is poor, barely making enough money to survive through petty crime, they seem to live happily together until an unforeseen incident reveals hidden secrets, testing the bonds that unite them.
Shoplifters has received rave reviews from critics since its debut at the Cannes Film Festival, currently maintaining a 100% rating on review aggregate Rotten Tomatoes with 36 reviews from critics, while also being a large financial hit in Japan.

The film, which is written and directed by celebrated Japanese filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda, stars Lily Franky, Sakura Ando, Mayu Matsuoka, Sosuke Ikematsu and Kirin Kiri in her final role following her death last month.
Shoplifters is set to hit theaters on November 23.
