A few recent big screen releases come home May 16, including franchise sequels Resident Evil: The Final Chapter and xXx: The Return of Xander Cage. There’s also the science fiction romance The Space Between Us, starring Asa Butterfield and Britt Robertson. Hitting only DVD this week, meanwhile, is the family adventure A Mermaid’s Tale.
With Wonder Woman heading to the big screen June 2, Warner Bros. has a new “commemorative edition” release of their original animated Wonder Woman film. Likewise, Universal Pictures is prepping for next month’s The Mummy with two new “Legacy Collections” of classic Universal Monsters films. Look for a Dracula set that includes Dracula, Dracula’s Daughter, Son of Dracula, House of Frankenstein, House of Dracula and Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein, and a Mummy set that includes The Mummy, The Mummy’s Hand, The Mummy’s Tomb, The Mummy’s Ghost, The Mummy’s Curse and Abbott and Costello Meet the Mummy.
Warner Archive this weeks brings to Blu-ray Vision Quest, director Harold Becker’s 1985 romantic drama that helped launch the careers of stars Matthew Modine and Linda Fiorentino. It arrive via the MOD service and marks the film’s first ever HD release.
The Criterion Collection offers an HD upgrade with a new Blu-ray edition of Yasujiro Ozu’s charming family comedy Good Morning.
Shout! Factory has quite a few great titles hitting Blu-ray and DVD this week. First up, a double helping of killer rats heads to the Scream Factory label. Look for new collector’s edition releases of both the original Willard and it’s sequel, Ben. Then, the Shout Select line expands with Walter Hill’s incredible cult classic Streets of Fire alongside two Bruce Lee features: 1972’s Return of the Dragon and 1978’s Game of Death, which tragically marked the final film from the late star.
Small screen releases offer a double helping of animated monsters. Look for the first new Digimon Adventure OVA as well as the complete
Pokemon Advanced. Rounding off the television titles is a re-release of the fifth volume of Mystery Science Theater 3000. The new set arrives on DVD this week, replacing the long out of print Rhino edition from 2004.
Arriving via Digital HD this week is the recent comedy Fist Fight, the religious drama The Shack, and a two very different superhero films: The LEGO Batman Movie and Logan. Then, on May 19, you’ll be able to catch IFC Midnight’s latest, The Survivalist.
