Regency Enterprises and 20th Century Fox have released a new clip from the romantic dramedy Rules Don’t Apply, featuring Lily Collins performing the titular song “The Rules Don’t Apply.” In partnership with the popular social media app Musical.ly, fans can submit their own Musical.ly performances of “The Rules Don’t Apply” song with some even receiving signed song sheets, movie posters and more.
Rules Don’t Apply is Warren Beatty’s first film as a director since 1998’s Bulworth. The film stars Lily Collins (The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, Mirror Mirror) and Alden Ehrenreich (Hail, Caesar!, the upcoming Han Solo spin-off movie), and features Beatty as the reclusive billionaire Howard Hughes.
An aspiring young actress (Lily Collins) and her ambitious young driver (Alden Ehrenreich) struggle hopefully with the absurd eccentricities of the wildly unpredictable billionaire (Warren Beatty), who they work for.
It’s Hollywood, 1958. Small town beauty queen and devout Baptist virgin Marla Mabrey (Collins), under contract to the infamous Howard Hughes (Beatty), arrives in Los Angeles. At the airport, she meets her driver Frank Forbes (Ehrenreich), who is engaged to be married to his 7th grade sweetheart and is a deeply religious Methodist. Their instant attraction not only puts their religious convictions to the test, but also defies Hughes’ #1 rule: no employee is allowed to have any relationship whatsoever with a contract actress. Hughes’ behavior intersects with Marla and Frank in very separate and unexpected ways, and as they are drawn deeper into his bizarre world, their values are challenged and their lives are changed.
“I never lost my curiosity about him,” said Beatty of his decades-long attempt to make a movie about Hughes. “We never met, but I sometimes feel like I knew everybody who knew Howard and I never lost my curiosity about him. It’s just that I don’t run around doing movies all the time.” The filmmaker and Hollywood legend — who hasn’t so much as appeared in a film since 2001’s Town & Country — also emphasizes that “this ain’t a biopic about Howard Hughes,” and that “It has some good laughs in it.”
The film’s star-studded cast also includes Haley Bennett, Alec Baldwin, Matthew Broderick, Candice Bergen, Steve Coogan, Martin Sheen, Ed Harris, Oliver Platt and Annette Bening.
20th Century Fox will release Rules Don’t Apply theatrically in the U.S. on November 23.
