Series nine of “Doctor Who” has a new trailer complete with a Daleks, Zygons, Missy (Michelle Gomez) and the Doctor (Peter Capaldi) replete with cool shades and an electric guitar. Over the past few seasons, mostly under the leadership of Steven Moffat, “Doctor Who” has broken out of its cult roots and become something of a global phenomenon.
Drawing even more attention to the upcoming season, set to premier on September 19, is “Game of Thrones” actor Maisie Williams in a role shrouded in mystery. Die hard Whovians have their theories about who she might be playing (the Doctor’s daughter or granddaughter perhaps?) but no actual details are known. We get a quick glimpse of her in this trailer in addition to a great image of Clara (Jenna Coleman) brandishing a bazooka.
This season looks to be the biggest yet and promises to introduce new baddies to the reliable stable of standards. This trailer is also notable for its sense of fun. Last season was a bit self-serious after the events of the 50th anniversary special and the appearance of an older Doctor. Bringing back the wonder and lightheartedness to the series should make it even more accessible to new and old fans alike.
